Compassionate Care When You Need It Most

Who We Are

Pet Hospice House Calls is a service provided by Dr. JoAnne Carey for the care of sick or elderly pets in the comfort and convenience of the home environment. The service includes review of the medical records, consultation, treatment where needed, intensive pain management, nutritional counseling, and lots of hand holding.

Dealing with a beloved pet during its end of life stages can be very stressful. Medical decisions concerning your pet’s care can be difficult to make and symptoms can be difficult to figure out on your own. You want to know if your pet is suffering or not. And you want to know what he or she needs in order to be as comfortable as possible during the hospice period. Pet Hospice House Calls is here to provide medical and emotional support when you need it most.

All of your questions and concerns about hospice care, euthanasia procedures and aftercare services will be thoroughly explained. You will have Dr. Carey’s cell phone number for emergency calls. We will make every attempt to schedule house calls at time that are most convenient to your schedule.

Our Mission

12

Our service is exclusively a house call practice, although we do have ready access to a full-service animal clinic (Takoma Park Animal Clinic) during regular business hours should the need arise. We will come to your home to provide veterinary services for terminally ill pets and for elderly animals that are aging due to natural causes. Our mission is to provide the most compassionate care possible in the limited-stress setting of your home environment. We also aim to alleviate any pain and discomfort that your pet may be experiencing during the end of life transition so that you can have more peaceful days together.

Get to Know Dr. JoAnne Carey

I am the founder of Pet Hospice House Calls. I have been in the Washington Metropolitan area since I was in college. During my undergraduate years at Howard University, I published an abstract on my research on celluar aging. This paved the way for my early interest in geriatrics and longevity.

In 1979, I graduated from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama and was awarded an internship in Medicine, Surgery and Radiology. After returning to this area, I worked at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington D.C. for seven years before opening Takoma Park Animal Clinic in 1988.

I started doing house calls while at Friendship Hospital and have continued to this day. I enjoy working with older pets and I became more aware of their special needs through the years as well as the requirements of hospice patients. Even though I treat the animals, their guardians often need caregiving from me as well.

It was our first time with you guys and we were very pleased with the services. So much so that we will now change our vet and stick with Takoma Park Animal Clinic! 🙂 The staff was friendly, attentive and coming in as a walk in we were seen quickly! I would highly recommend TPAC to my friends and family.

I'm SO HAPPY we found Takoma Park Animal Clinic! My wife and I, and our fur-baby, love this place. The doctors and techs are great at what they do, and they are unusually reasonably priced, and they're open on the weekends! I sometimes feel guilty about how good a deal this vet is relative to some of the other vets around.
